Dr. Fredric Newman with The Aesthetic Surgery Center explains what patients can expect from rhinoplasty, one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures in the U.S.

Darien, CT Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in America. In fact, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says nearly 150,000 people had some type of nose surgery in 2014 alone. Often referred to as nose job surgery, rhinoplasty can reshape the nose to address cosmetic dissatisfaction, or it can be performed to correct a functional breathing problem caused by a deviated septum or other structural issue. Dr. Fredric Newman, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Fairfield County, Connecticut, has made rhinoplasty a special focus of his practice. He says there have been many advances in the field of nose surgery over the years, and he has personally seen the positive effects the procedure has had on many of his patients. Dr. Newman says, while rhinoplasty can be a very effective treatment that yields life-changing results, it is important for individuals considering nose surgery to be knowledgeable of what the treatment can do and what they can expect.

Dr. Newman says rhinoplasty can benefit patients in numerous ways. In cases where a patient requests cosmetic nasal enhancement, the procedure is designed to essentially reshape the nose, enhancing balance and harmony among facial features. A large nasal bridge or hump can be reduced, the width of the nostrils can be minimized, and the appearance of the nasal tip can be improved. Dr. Newman says renewing the contours of the nose can ultimately have a positive effect on the entire facial aesthetic, bringing patients new confidence in the way they look. He notes that many individuals who suffer from nasal breathing problems can also significantly benefit from nose surgery.

As with any surgical procedure,, there are risks involved with rhinoplasty. Some of those risks include excessive swelling, complications with anesthesia, bleeding, infection, pain or numbness in the nasal area, dissatisfaction with the overall results, and issues that may necessitate a revision rhinoplasty procedure. With that in mind, Dr. Newman says, many of the potential complications of rhinoplasty are very rare. He notes that an experienced plastic surgeon who has performed this procedure many times and who utilizes advanced rhinoplasty techniques is often able to minimize surgical risks as much as possible. Plus, he says, the patient can help reduce risks as well by following post-operative instructions to the letter in order to ensure a safe and effective healing process.

Since each patients surgery is customized to his or her unique physical needs and goals, Dr. Newman says the rhinoplasty recovery period will be slightly different for everyone. Patients can typically expect about five to seven days of downtime before returning to work or other daily activities. Most of the swelling in the treatment area should go down in the first few weeks following rhinoplasty; however, Dr. Newman explains, it can often take several months, and up to a year in some cases, for it to completely fade. He says there is typically only a minimal amount of pain involved in the recovery process, and many patients liken any discomfort they feel to that of a headache or the common cold. Dr. Newman notes that most individuals are able to alleviate any pain they experience during this time with over-the-counter medication such as Extra Strength Tylenol.

Dr. Newman advises rhinoplasty patients to be aware that, while some of the results will be noticeable as the initial swelling dissipates, the final outcome may not be apparent until several months after the procedure. He says individuals who are considering nose surgery should be sure to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon and have all of their questions answered honestly. Overall, Dr. Newman believes thorough patient education combined with the skilled hand of an experienced plastic surgeon can help one successfully renew his or her nasal appearance with results that look beautiful and natural.
